Monarch of the Glen - Exam Answer

The clip starts with causal work men loading up a vehicle and talking among themselves, this divides the sense of equality between the workers are respect between one another. The camera follows the man holding the shovels which focuses the shot on him giving him more authority in the shot. It shows various different men and different ages, this challenges the stereotypes of older people being unable to work.
The next scene shows the girl walking out of the building and talking to a younger man, her accent shows that she could be new to the area, the camera then pauses on the girl in casual clothing. This gives the sense of doubt in her mind as she has just been given a set of keys to a car she clearly has no clue on how to drive. The non diegetic music starts to gradually increase, showing that there is a build up to an event or accident. The girl in the car talks throughout he controls, showing that she is inexperienced and not old enough to drive, the camera then jumps back to the younger man who looks worried and has a sense of fear as he hasn't heard the car drive off. He then sees the car drive off and has relief. A few seconds later a non diegetic loud crash sound in the distance is heard, the attitude and dress of the older man she has crashed into shows authority and control over the girl who is impetuous. The man is well spoken and smartly dressed which provides this sense of authority. The close up camera shot of the older mans face shows shock that Amy has run away and is irresponsible and reckless. This reinforces the stereotypical teenager that is portrayed by adults.

This clip then goes to a scene in the house, the house has quality wood decorations and doors which gives the sense of wealth. This shows that the people who live in the house have the most authority and are looked up at. The older man also says he is responsible for Amy, and requests she goes back to school. The room is empty and no music or sound is played, this emphasises the power and request the older man has towards Amy. The camera then goes to the man talking to Amy at the stairs, he is very authoritative and controlling towards Amy questioning why she lied, Amy then begs and says sorry which shows how little power and experience she has. Amy is then rebellious and runs off shouting I hate you.

The music then builds up and the clip carries on outside, this shows the workers doing there everyday job with a non diegetic country sound track in the background. This provides us with the idea that this is set in the country quite far from any civilisation. The music then drops and the clip carries on in Amy's room. The music becomes slow and almost sad, the camera follows Amy around her room packing her stuff. This shows Amy to be sad as she is young and didn't know what she was doing, the close up of the photo of her at this house also adds to her emotion and sadness of leaving. Amy also left a note with a teddy bear, this gives the audience a sense of that she is still a child and acts in a childish manor. The camera then pans up to the woman calling for Amy, her tone of voice provides a sense of sadness and upset as Amy has to leave. The soundtrack played also emphasises the emotions throughout that scene.

The next scene is workers outside, the older man demands for them to stop doing their work on his land but the younger man twists and manipulates the way he replies. This shows power and authority towards the older man as he just completely ignores him and walks off. This reinforces the stereotype of older people being lonely and powerless. The composition of the shot shows the younger man to be taller and closer to the camera which empathises the power over the older man. A woman then comes running out of breath, showing her poor health, tells the man Amy has run away. The close up of his face shows his reaction, he looks shocked but still in control of the situation.

As a whole I think that the clip reinforced enforces the stereotypes of age, whether that being a young person being irresponsible or an elderly man being lonely and powerless. This also shows that youths can put on a more adult front to hide there younger self.
